Meet Tim Dosch,a 40 Under 40 honoree who co-founded a land brokerage and a nonprofit endeavor

By   –  Reporter, Houston Business Journal,

The Houston Business Journal recently announced our 40 Under 40 Class of 2021, and we’re rolling out profiles of all 40 honorees ahead of our live awards broadcast on June 17. Click here to register for the free virtual event, which includes a celebration of the launch of Houston Inno, our new partner.

When Tim Dosch first moved to Houston after attending Texas A&M University, he didn’t know anybody in the local real estate industry — and he knew few people here, period. But one night while playing basketball with his brother, he met and struck up a conversation with Fred Caldwell, president and CEO of Houston-based Caldwell Cos.

Despite not having any qualifications, Dosch pursued a job at Caldwell’s real estate development firm for several weeks. Caldwell eventually gave Dosch a job and thus a start in the local real estate industry.

Dosch began partnering with David Marshall on deals in 2008, and the pair — along with Tim’s brother, Tom Dosch — left ARA Newmark Houston to form land brokerage Dosch Marshall Real Estate in 2017. The firm grew 300% in less than three years and now has offices in Houston, Dallas and Austin. Dosch says his team has completed over 372 transactions, totaling over $2 billion in transaction volume.

But Dosch also says he has a passion for investing in nonprofits, particularly those fighting sex trafficking, rehabilitating former prison inmates, serving Houston’s homeless and feeding the hungry. In 2018, the trio founded 100X Harvest Inc., which distributes 100% of funds received to charities. The partners cover all overhead and back office expenses, which has allowed 100X Harvest to fund $1.6 million to nonprofit organizations so far. The trio also run Front Porch Fund, a $25 million fund started in 2019 to target investment and development in prime urban Texas submarkets, including Houston, Dallas and Austin.

Where’s your favorite place to go in Houston?

Why do you feel it’s important to be an active member of the community?

It’s easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of business and racking up personal accomplishments and miss connecting with the people all around us in our community. As much as I value winning professionally, it is empty by itself unless that success is used to help people in need. I have found a lot of meaning and purpose in helping people in our community and supporting nonprofits who are doing incredible work to transform lives. There is a lot of difficult work to do in our community, but it is rewarding to come alongside passionate people willing to do the hard work to promote real change.

How do you use your voice to inspire change?

My business dealings put me in front of a lot of people and companies with money and resources who want to help but do not know how to get involved. I have a passion for helping direct funds to needs in the community by using the relationships I have developed selling commercial real estate to connect giving projects to resources. To further that passion, I started 100X Harvest three years ago with my business partners. This endeavor exists to encourage giving to nonprofits and fund bigger projects by bringing together like-minded donors.

What advice would you give to the next generation?

Technology and the economy are changing rapidly, spawning new innovations and opportunities. Determine to make learning to work smart a lifelong pursuit. Be long-term focused on relationships and help other people succeed. At the midpoint of your career, you will realize that relationships were the building blocks of your career as much as your effort and hard work. Lastly, be persistent and stay positive when you go through tough times. Success goes to those who keep working and do not give up through the market down cycles.
